An Australian teenager is lucky to be alive after falling more than 15m through the ceiling of Melbourne's Block Arcade shopping centre.

The 18-year-old and two friends made their way up to the fourth floor of the building at around 3.30 p.m.

They were climbing up onto the roof when one of them slipped and fell.

He fell 9 metres before smashing through the arcade roof, falling a further 6 metres onto the tiled floor.

A spokeswoman for Ambulance Victoria said the man was transferred to the Royal Melbourne hospital in a serious condition where he is being treated for fractures to his wrists, legs and pelvis.

The Royal Melbourne hospital confirmed the man's condition had deteriorated and remained in a critical condition.

Police are looking into why the men were on the roof in the first place.
