Egyptian policeman shot dead in drive-by shooting

A policeman was killed and another injured in a drive-by shooting in southern Egypt, according to a Reuters report.
Unknown militants approached a checkpoint in the outskirts of the southern town of Aswan early Wednesday morning.
The two gunmen opened fire on security forces near the village of al-Shatb.
One of the suspects was killed, while the other was injured, according to a report by Egypt's Ahram Online.
Two bystanders also sustained injuries during the gunfight.
The incident appeared to be an act of revenge carried out by relatives of a man killed by police at the same checkpoint, according to the Reuters report, which cited Egypt's Interior Ministry.
The man was killed was killed by security officials as he tried to "avoid the police by reversing at speed away from the checkpoint," according to the statement released by the ministry. No further details regarding that incident were revealed in the statement.
The incident follows the death of both a police officer and a civilian last Friday when armed men attacked a Cairo police checkpoint.
Over 340 policemen have been killed in attacks across Egypt in the last 30 months, according to a report by the Global Times, a Chinese tabloid owned by the Communist Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily.
