Police find foetus in bag of NYC teen arrested for shoplifting

A security guard on duty in a Victoria's Secret Store in New York City discovered a foetus hidden beneath clothing upon searching a suspected shoplifters bag, police said.

Tonia Rodriguez and her friend Francis Estevez, both 17-years-old were leaving the Midtown store at about 1.10 p.m. on Thursday when guards stopped the pair.

Police were called to attend what began as an unremarkable case of apparent shoplifting. But while the girls were being handcuffed the guard noticed a bad odor wafting from Rodriguez's bag. On searching through the contents, he discovered the human remains wrapped in plastic buried beneath clothing.

The two girls were arrested on suspicion of petit larceny. NYPD detectives gathered the grisly evidence to investigate whether a felony had occurred. An autopsy is being conducted on the remains to determine the cause of death.

Rodriguez told police she suffered a miscarriage the day before and just didn't know what do with the foetus.

Police later searched the home of the girl, who is already the mother of a young son.

She was taken to Bellevue Hospital.
