A bus bomb detonates near Tel Aviv

A bomb went off on a bus near Tel Aviv on Sunday shortly after all passengers were evacuated, causing no casualties.

The bus, which carried 12 passengers, was travelling in Bat Yam near Tel Aviv on Sunday afternoon. According to Jerusalem Post, a young boy on board saw an unattended bag sitting near him. A passenger named David Pappo alerted the driver Michael Yuger, who asked the passengers whose bag it was.

As no one claimed the bag, Pappo opened the large black bag and found something like a pressure cooker with a red wire coming out of it. Police arrived in four minutes after receiving the news and helped all people escape the bus after it reached a stop.

The New York Times reported the bomb detonated about ten minutes after the evacuation. No one was wounded except a police officer whose hearing was affected by the blast.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Israeli authorities believe the blast was the work of Palestinian militants. "We confirm the explosion on the bus today was a terror attack, based on assessments and evidence gathered at the scene," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told Reuters.

Meanwhile, Hamas and militant group Islamic Jihad praised the attack. Hamas said the bombing was a "brave, heroic work in response to the crimes of the occupation" in a statement, while Islamic Jihad said it would be "a prologue for the resumption of martyrdom operations."

Israel saw the last bus bombing in Tel Aviv in November 2012, which injured more than 20 passengers. An Israeli Arab pleaded guilty to planting the bomb this month, citing political reasons for the attack.
