A 22-year-old German tourist was killed after falling from Mount Kinabalu's peak in Borneo on Monday morning (February 10).

Victoria Paulsen was scaling the mountain with a group of four other tourists led by a local tour guide to see the sunrise from the peak.

Paulsen stepped into a cordoned-off area at Low's Peak where she slipped on loose rocks and fell 30 metres down a granite slope at around 6 a.m. Rescue efforts were initiated at around 7 a.m. Her body was brought down the mountain 11 hours later.

"The victim is believed to have suffered serious injuries to her head and legs but the actual cause of her death would be investigated," Sabah Parks head of safety and enforcement Thomas Yussop said in a Sun Daily report. Paulsen's body is kept at the Ranau Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem.

Tens of thousands of people ascend Mount Kinabalu each year. Fatal accidents rarely occur.
