Woman and accomplice murdered debt-ridden husband for life insurance money in Japan

A 48-year-old Japanese woman and a 62-year-old lorry driver were arrested on Thursday on suspicion of pushing her 61-year-old debt-ridden husband into Manazuru Kanagawa fishing port last November. The pair, Akira Shimizu and Mami Sakamaki stand accused of drowning, Kazuo Sakamaki, to get his insurance money.

Mami, the victim's wife, said that her husband took her and her elder daughter fishing on the evening of November 9. She said he was drunk, and left the women in the car. Several hours later when he had still not returned, she said she went to look for him and found his body floating in the water.

An autopsy found a cocktail of alcohol and sleeping pills in the victim's body, arousing the suspicion of investigators. The man was deeply in debt. During investigations police found that the victim had been paying four different life insurance policies, totalling 100 million yen (US$ 1 million). Police are now treating the case as murder for hire and took the duo into custody. The driver reportedly confessed to the murder during questioning, saying that the victim was in too much debt and that he wanted to die. The wife, however, has denied any involvement in the killing and said she watched while the driver murder her husband.
