Police in the southern Chinese province of Fujian received an unexpected call Saturday night from a man confessing to a crime of passion and urging police to come and shoot him.

The man, a 50-year-old former convict surnamed Wu had killed a former 20-year-old mistress, whom he had reportedly been paying a monthly retainer of US$4,100.

The pair, who had been living in the city of Zhangzhou, had an argument over the monthly fee, but quickly made up and travelled together to the port city of Xiamen.

The argument apparently resurfaced last Wednesday, when the mistress told Wu she would be leaving him.

Wu flew off the handle and, wielding a knife, butchered his former lover.

The idea of suicide crossed his mind, but after reconsidering, he reportedly dragged the woman's corpse into his bathroom and wrapped it up with a bed sheet.

Three days later, Wu finally made the call to local police. He confessed to the crime and threatened to burn down his apartment unless police sent a sniper to his location and shot him.

When they arrived at the scene, authorities evacuated the apartment complex and broke into Wu's home.

They found him sitting along a ledge, holding a knife up to his neck and discovered his mistresses body lying in the bathroom.

Firefighters next set up inflatable cushions in case Wu jumped. It took police two hours to convince him, but Wu eventually dropped the knife, climbed back into his apartment and surrendered.

Given his history and the sheer brutality of the murder, the former convict will likely spend his remaining years behind bars.
