Japanese police arrested a high school girl on Sunday in Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture for killing and dismembering a classmate the night before.
Aiwa Matsuo, the 15-year-old victim, did not return home on Saturday night after visiting her classmate’s house. She had texted her mother earlier that night to say she would arrive home by 7 p.m. Matsuo’s father reported her missing to police after 11 p.m. because she had not returned home.
Police say Matsuo was attacked sometime after 8 p.m. that night. Her assailant reportedly struck her with a blunt object before strangling her to death. Police visited the suspect’s apartment at 3 a.m. and found Matsuo lying dead on a bed. She had been decapitated and her left hand severed at the wrist. Tools used in the murder and dismemberment including two hammers and a saw were found in the suspect's room.
The suspect admitted to committing the crime during the police interrogation and said she was the sole perpetrator.
