Knockout game hate crime: 72-year-old man punched in face in West Village, New York

New York police are looking for two young men, one of whom suckerpunched a 72-year-old man for no reason around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The victim, identified as Donald Lathrom, was on his way home from the park, walking on Jane Street in the New York’s West Village.

Lathrom said he noticed the young man standing on the sidewalk but said he wasn’t concerned. The suspect waited as Lathrom approached and his accomplice watched from across the street. Then without warning, the aggressor landed a right hook on the old man’s face.

Lathrom went down like a one-legged man in a kicking contest while the suspects fled the scene. Lathrom was 50 feet from his front door. A doorman who knew him rushed to his aid and called 911. He was rushed to a hospital where he was treated for facial bruising and a large blood clot in his head.

Police are asking for leads from the public in their attempt to identify the two individuals
involved in the “knockout game” style assault.

“I never would have treated this individual with suspicion,” he told NBC reporters from his hospital bed.
