Woman ends up with 30 stitches after mistaking rabid raccoon for pet cat

A Connecticut woman was mauled by a raccoon late last week after accidentally confusing the animal for her pet cat, according to a Channel 3 Eyewitness News report.

After she heard noises coming from outside late on Sunday evening, Betty McKernan, 88, opened the sliding glass door of her Hamden home to let her cat in, but unwittingly also let a reportedly rabid raccoon inside.

McKernan was attacked by the animal after she confused the raccoon for her cat and began petting it.

The struggling octogenarian managed to dial 911 and police were eventually able to subdue the raccoon.

Despite serious injuries to her face, forearm, elbow and hand, McKernan is recuperating at home and is expected to make a full recovery.
