By now, you’ve probably seen some of our censored videos in your feed. This is because YouTube is not a level playing field and content creators like us have little power.

Some people would prefer certain stories not be told, like a piece we did about a drunk loudmouth in New York who made a fool of himself in a video that went viral.

Without even notifying us before taking action, YouTube removed the video from our channel citing “inappropriate content”. We assume it’s because the subject, Gerry Shalam, complained about the story. But we just reported the facts.

It happened again with a story about a man who admitted to ejaculating into his boss’ soup then bragging about the deed to his girlfriend on Facebook.

YouTube, again citing vague community guidelines, pulled the video without prior notice.

The Kate Upton and J-Law nude photo scandal? We didn’t even show the leaked pics, yet, someone (probably the women’s lawyers) complained, and YouTube disappeared the video, sending us the same vague message about guidelines.

As a news outlet, we cover both hard news and popular stories people want to see. We will not permit YouTube to decide what’s news, or be beholden to its Puritan take on what’s appropriate.

YouTube has pulled down a number of videos from our channel. YouTube in effect wants to decide what you can and cannot see, or what we can and cannot publish.

This is why we link through to the stories on our website.

All of these stories can still be found on our app and our site, TomoNews.net.
