Wine fermentation fumes causes a winemaker to fall to her death

A young Spanish winemaker suffocated to death after she fell into a giant vat of wine at her family’s winery in the village of Salas de los Barrios, in El Bierzo.

Nerea Perez, 25, had been working for the winery run by her uncle Raul Perez, a well-known winemaker, for two years after graduating from Coruna University in Chemistry and the Environment in 2012

On Monday afternoon she was observing the fermentation process in an industrial cellar when she was overcome by fumes given off during fermentation, lost her balance and fell into the vat.

Her uncle found her body and called emergency services. When rescuers arrived she had been overcome by the fumes and they were unable to revive her.

Carbon monoxide poisoning during winemaking can easily occur if precautions are not taken.

The gas is colorless and odorless. It’s heavier than air so it sinks to the bottom of vats.
