Argentine prosecutor who accused president of Iran cover up found dead a day before hearing

An Argentine prosecutor who accused president Cristina Fernandez of staging a cover-up of Iran’s involvement in a 1994 bomb attack at a Jewish Community Centre has been found dead in his apartment, a day before he was about to testify in front of Congress.

The body of Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman was discovered after his security detail contacted Nisman’s mother on Sunday afternoon when they could not reach him.

His body was found dead in his apartment on the 13th floor of Le Parc Tower, a high-rise building in an upscale neighbourhood of the Argentine capital.

The mother hired a locksmith to open the door after finding the apartment was locked from the inside.

Once inside, she found Nisman’s body on the bathroom floor. Next to the body were a 22-calibre handgun and a single bullet casing.

"Everything indicates it was a suicide," National Security Secretary Sergio Berni told local television. According to preliminary autopsy results, no one was involved in the prosecutor’s death. However, the possibility of a provoked suicide cannot be eliminated at this stage.

Nisman believed that Iran instigated the bombing attack on the Jewish Community Centre and President Cristina Fernandez had obstructed the investigation so Argentina could export grain in exchange for Iranian oil, as the South American country has a seven billion energy deficit each year.

The 1994 bombing attack at the AIMA Jewish Community killed 85 people. President Fernandez had dismissed Nisman’s accusations as ridiculous.
