Big rig accidents: Stupid highway design, ramp causes trucks to overturn - TomoNews

If you find yourself at the junction of I-20 and I-285 on Atlanta's east side, please slow down! Truckers say that this area creates an optical illusion causing havoc for those not familiar with the off-ramp. The main problem is in the design. It's an old cloverleaf that's been upgraded in fits and starts over the course of almost 45 years.

The transition ramp is almost as wide as the freeway, but then it abruptly dumps you into a horseshoe curve to the left. Because it shares space with another transition road that is just divided by a concrete barrier, it gives the illusion that the road will continue straight ahead; that shallow-banked left turn has little warning for drivers who don't see it.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is making plans to put warnings lamps in the area reminding people to check their speed, but the real fix needs to come in the form of an interchange reconstruction project that doesn't seem like it will ever find funding in the near-future.
