Cooperative child care and village schools, where children grow together
Children in Korea receive private education from an early age to prepare for university entrance exams. Accordingly, parents have been increasing efforts to develop new education methods and implement them. One of these new methods include cooperative child care center. Parents believe that directly managing child care centers through cooperation and care can provide a safer and happier environment for children. The first cooperative child care center was built in 1994 in Mapo-gu, and it expanded to 84 locations all across the country by 2014. Similar methods have been applied to older elementary and middle school students in a form of village schools. Can cooperative child care centers and village schools be solutions to education issues Korea is facing? We take a look at current issues in Korean education and alternatives to private education.
