Wrong place wrong time: Tape measure falls 50 floors, kills worker at New Jersey construction site

With skyscrapers all around us, it’s a wonder death by falling object isn’t all that common. But sadly, accidents do happen.

On Monday at a site in New Jersey, a tape measure somehow came off a construction worker’s tool belt and fell 50 stories down.

The tape measure weighed just a pound, or about 450 grams, but it was heavy enough to kill Gary Anderson, a worker in his 50s who was delivering supplies to the site.

Anderson had been speaking to someone in a truck. When he leaned out of the vehicle, the tape measure hit him square on the head, knocking him out. He later died at hospital of cardiac arrest.

The company constructing the tower in New Jersey said hard hats are required at the site, but Anderson may not have had time to don one.
