Police dash cam shooting: Oregon cops cleared in shooting of stabbing suspect
  • 9 years ago
Three cops who shot dead the assailant involved in the fatal stabbing of a Linfield College football player at a 7-Eleven last month were cleared on Monday as footage of the deadly shooting was released.

Parker Moore, 20, of Woodinville, Washington was stabbed to death on Nov. 15 by 33-year-old Joventino Bermudez-Arenas of McMinnville. No motive has been determined as to why Bermudez-Arenas, a tree-farm worker, stabbed the Linfield College sophomore

Toxicology reports were not provided for Bermudez-Arenas on Monday. He had no history of mental illness, Yamhill County District Attorney Brad Berry said at a news conference.

According to police reports, Moore and 19-year-old Scott Skurdahl, a friend and teammate on the football team, drove to the 7-Eleven across the street from campus to get a beer. Moore entered the store while Skurdahl stayed in the vehicle.

Skurdahl told police that Bermudez-Arenas looked so “sketchy” standing by a RedBox kiosk by the entrance that he locked the car doors, the reports said.

Surveillance video shows Bermudez-Arenas from inside the store lift up his white shirt and pull out a knife at least a half-foot long with a four-inch wooden handle. A 7-Eleven worker and another customer, Richard Taylor, told authorities that Bermudez-Arenas came into the store while Moore was the at the cash register, stabbed him twice in the chest, and ran out the door.

Skurdahl and Taylor used napkins to help stop Moore’s hemorrhaging as emergency medics arrived. Before Moore died, he told Skurdahl to get his cell phone and text him mom that he loved her.

Police dash-cam footage released showed Officers Brian McMullen and Justin James arrive at the 7-Eleven minutes after the stabbing. Sgt. Rhonda Sandoval arrives soon after.

At about 11:15 p.m., McMullen and James and the 7-Eleven owner are talking outside when Bermudez-Arenas appears next to the RedBox DVD kiosk.

About 50 seconds goes by when one officer looks over and asks, “Is that him?”

The two officers draw their guns and are soon joined by Sandoval. Bermudez-Arenas silently raised his hands above his head, the knife in one hand. The officers yell at him to get down and drop the knife.

According to Berry, Bermudez-Arenas appeared agitated. He clenched his fists in the air and shook his hands twice towards officer. On the third time, he appeared to take a step towards the officers and all three opened fire.

Bermudez-Arenas then falls to the ground where he eventually died from the gunshot wounds.
