AirAsia plane QZ8501 to Singapore lost with 162 onboard

On Sunday, an Indonesia AirAsia flight with 162 people aboard lost contact with air traffic control and is presumed to have crashed. Indonesia AirAsia flight 8501 from Surabaya to Singapore took off at 5:35 a.m. local time. Less than an hour later, the pilot informed Indonesian air traffic control that he wanted to increase elevation from 32,000 feet to 38,000 feet to better cope with bad weather ahead. At 6:17 a.m. air traffic control lost all contact with flight 8501.

Severe storms in the area have caused deadly flooding in Malaysia and Thailand in recent days.

AirAsia released a statement, saying “The aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and was requesting deviation due to enroute weather before communication with the aircraft was lost.”

Flight 8501, an Airbus A320-200, was carrying 155 passengers and seven crew. Except for three South Koreans, a French citizen, a Singaporean, and a Malaysian among the passengers, all other occupants of the plane were Indonesian.

The incident comes at the end of a disastrous year for the region's airlines.

Malaysia's national flag carrier, Malaysia Airlines, lost two aircraft this year. Flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board and has still not been found.

On July 17, Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

Indonesia AirAsia has a fleet of 30 Airbus A320s. The missing plane has been in service for just over six years, according to airfleets.net.
