Missing AirAsia flight QZ8501: Black boxes are yet to be found

Indonesian authorities pledged to step up the search for the wreckage of the AirAsia flight 8501 amid bad weather. If the black boxes are to be found, more light will be shed on the plane crash that claimed more than 160 lives.

“Black box” is a general term referring to two mandatory pieces of equipment on aircraft: a cockpit voice recorder; and a flight data recorder.

The cockpit voice recorder has an underwater locator beacon, a stack of memory cards and an audio compression board. A monitoring unit and microphones in the cockpit transmit the recordings of pilot conversations and engine sounds to the cockpit voice recorder in the back.

With a similar appearance to the cockpit voice recorder, the flight data recorder also has an underwater locator beacon and memory cards that allow it to record data for up to 25 hours. By using sensors on engines, wings and rudder, the device can store information such as airspeed, pressure, altitude and fuel flow.

The two black boxes emit inaudible pings after coming into contact with water. They can function from as deep as 14,000 feet.
