First high-speed railway system in U.S. to be built in California

Construction on the United States’ first high-speed railway system is set to break ground on Tuesday in California.

The first leg of the $68-billion bullet train will be constructed in Fresno, with plans to expand the line so trains can run from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

The train will travel faster at 220 miles per hour, according to multiple reports, and will cut the six-hour commute from northern to southern California in half.

Diana Gomez from California’s High-Speed Rail Authority told CBS News the railway system will help ease gridlock traffic in the region and help to improve the quality of the air.

“Our goal is to have a train running from San Francisco to Los Angeles,” she said, adding that the rail system will also create jobs.

However, CBS News also reported that there are opponents to the project. Kathy Omachi with Chinatown Revitalization, Inc. told the news outlet that the railway system would block streets in Fresno’s Chinatown and force many buildings in the neighborhood to be torn down.
