Yemen crisis: Ceasefire reached after Houthis surround presidential palace and state news agency

The Yemeni government and Houthi rebels reached a ceasefire deal on Monday after hours of intense fighting in the capital that led to at least nine deaths.

Houthi rebels opened fire on a convoy carrying Prime Minister Khaled Bahah, who was leaving the presidential palace after a meeting with the president and a Houthi adviser.

Scores of Houthi fighters also surrounded the presidential palace, triggering a fierce gunfight during which heavy machine guns and grenade launchers were used. Houthi insurgents also seize the state news agency in the capital Sanaa.

Soldiers retaliated by shelling a housing complex that doubles as a Houthi base.

Tensions between the government and the Houthis began to escalate on Saturday when rebels abducted the president’s Chief of Staff and his two bodyguards after stopping their vehicle in the centre of Sanaa, the Independent reported.

The Houthis have rejected a draft constitution which stipulates the division of Yemen into six regions. They instead want to divide Yemen into two regions, a move which would allow them to cement their power.
