Domestic violence: Popular young athlete beat his girlfriend to death with curling iron

Clayton Whittemore, now age 23, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for second-degree murder after beating his high school sweetheart to death two years ago.
Clayton Whittemore and Alexandra Kogut met and fell in love with each other back in high school, in Connecticut. The two seemed to be a golden couple, Clayton was a popular athlete and Alexandra was captain of the women’s swim team.
The two began a long distance relationship when Alexandra went to university in New York state in 2013. During her first year at university Clayton drove the 150 miles to visit his girlfriend. Alexandra seemed excited in her Tweets and eager to see Clayton.
Only the weekend wouldn’t go how either of them had imaged.
It was around 2 am when Clayton and Alexandra began arguing. The argument escalated, Alexandra allegedly pushed Clayton and he retaliated by punching her, then punching her again and again and again.
After he’d beaten Alexandra senseless Clayton picked up her curling iron and continued beating her with the implement until she stopped breathing. He then fled without calling emergency services.
It was Alexandra’s mother who contacted school authorities to check on her daughter after Alexandra didn’t answer her mobile.
The police caught Clayton just two hours later, headed for the Canadian border.
Clayton’s trial started last year and he pled not guilty, claiming he’d been abused as a child. Apparently the judge and jury didn’t buy his defense and sentenced him to 25 years in prison.
The judge told the young man: “You call an ambulance. You get help. She wasn’t some animal.”
