Alternative Medicine fail: Man eats fish gallbladder, suffers renal failure, almost dies

In Hunan, located in central China, a man identified by his last name Wang, was dining with friends. They bought a large “grass carp” and as Wang was gutting and scaling the fish he removed the gallbladder and ate it raw.
There is a common misconception that eating the gallbladder of fish--particularly grass carp gallbladder--can improve an individual’s health, vision, and rheumatism. Folk medicine also believes that the bile from the gallbladder of other animals can cure fever and asthma.
However, that wasn’t true for Mr. Wang. Two days after the dinner party with his friends the 33 year old was suffering from acute abdominal pains, vomiting, and diarrhea. He insisted that it was just a bad case of food poisoning. Mr. Wang waited another day and it wasn’t until his limbs began to swell and the tips of his fingers and toes began to blacken did he decide to go to hospital.
Mr. Wang spent 2 days in intensive care at the hospital as he was treated for the early stages of renal failure and severe fish gallbladder poisoning, which is apparently a thing. Mr. Wang is now stable but will remain in hospital for another week or possibly two.
Doctors caution that fish gallbladder poisoning can lead to acute renal failure and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Fish gallbladder poisoning commonly occurs in China, Vietnam, and India where you’ll find geniuses like Mr. Wang.
