While it might sound like the plot of an eerie Tim Burton flick, there’s a superstition that exists in China that if a man dies before being married, his family needs to acquire a ‘ghost bride’ for him in his afterlife.

The ‘ghost bride’ is a woman whose body is buried with that of a dead man.

This belief might explain why a family in China’s eastern Shandong province twice lost their daughter: once, when she died and a second time when her corpse was stolen from her grave.

Their daughter, Xiao Pu, died six months ago from carbon monoxide poisoning at the age of 28. Her family decided not to have her body cremated and instead gave her a full burial.

They returned to visit her grave a few months later only to discover that it was empty and their daughter’s body had been snatched.

As she’d been in the ground for quite some time, local authorities believe the only plausible reason someone would take her body was to sell her as a ‘ghost bride’.
