Deadly bacteria released from high-security lab near New Orleans infects four monkeys and one human

A potential safety breach at Tulane University’s National Primate Research Center exposed four macaques and one federal health inspector to a deadly bacteria.

The university’s biosafety level 3 laboratory, located 35 miles north of New Orleans, has been studying the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei in order to create a vaccine for the deadly bacteria. Researchers suspect that the bacteria somehow spread to several macaques housed in the center’s breeding colony in November of last year. Two of the monkeys were unable to recover from the illness and were euthanized.

Months later in January, a Food and Drug Administration health inspector fell ill after visiting the center. Certain antibodies in her blood showed that her body had been exposed to the bacteria. However, it remains unclear whether she was exposed to the bacterium at the facility or prior to visiting the facility during one of her frequent international trips.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, a bacteria usually found in Southeast Asia and northern Australia, spreads to humans and animals when they come into contact with contaminated water or soil. It causes a disease called melioidosis, whose symptoms include joint pains, fevers and often death.

The safety breach at Tulane’s laboratory is worrisome because of the center’s proximity to residential areas and a school. Preliminary research conducted by federal officials indicate that the center’s soil and water are not contaminated by the bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims that there is “no known threat to the public.” The cause of the release and extent of the contamination remain unknown.
