Building collapse: 7 workers dead in Bangladesh cement factory with poor working conditions

At least seven people were killed when the roof of a five-story building collapsed on Thursday in Bangladesh.

At least 180 workers were working in the Sena Kalyan Sangstha factory when the roof collapsed, trapping workers underneath.

Initially, 100 people were believed to have been trapped, however, the number was much lower, said senior district official Mohammad Shah Alam Sardar to Reuters.

The factory, owned by a Bangladeshi army welfare organization was still under construction when the roof collapsed, 335 kilometers southwest of the capital Dhaka.

Rescue workers recovered six bodies during the first 12 hours of the search.

One more body was recovered on Friday. More than 60 people in total were reported injured before the search was called off.

Bangladesh is known for its poor record for building safety. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
