Desert White Elephant? Egypt announces new $45 billion capital

During a recent international economic summit, Egyptian Housing Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that Egypt will be building a new capital within the next seven years.

Egyptian officials recently announced plans to build the new capital 700 square kilometers east of Cairo, between Cairo and the Suez Canal. They hope the new plans will relieve pressure on Cairo, whose metropolitan population is straining the city's infrastructure.

The United Arab Emirates helped fund the new city, which has an estimated total cost of US$45 billion. Officials say the city will also take about 5-7 years to complete.

The new capital will be 12 times the size of New York's Manhattan Island, and will include 1.1 million residential units that are expected to house up to five million people. The new capital will also include government buildings, a theme park, a solar farm, electric trains, resorts and shopping malls.

Once complete, the city will be the biggest purpose-built capital to date.
