Police shoot unarmed man: Cop charged for homicide for shooting man in the back

Lisa Mearkle, a 14-year veteran police officer in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, was charged with criminal homicide on Tuesday for shooting an unarmed man. Police investigators found that Mearkle used force without legal justification.

While conducting a traffic patrol around 4 p.m. on February 2, Mearkle, 36, noticed David Kassick’s sedan had an expired inspection sticker from December 2014. She maneuvered her vehicle and attempted to pull the 59-year-old Kassick over. Instead of stopping, Kassick ignored her flashing lights and drove away.

Mearkle gave chase as Kassick drove to Grandview Road and pulled into a driveway before fleeing to the house’s backyard on foot. Mearkle followed him to an embankment at the side of the house, where she tasered him. Kassick fell to the snowy ground with his back facing the officer as she tasered him at least a second time.

Mearkle wasn’t able to see Kassick’s left hand and ordered him to put his hands up.
With his left hand, Kassick tried to pull out the two taser probes in his back.
Mearkle, still holding the taser in her left hand, took out her police-issued pistol with her right hand and shot Kassick twice in the back. Kassick was pronounced dead at the scene after additional officers arrived.

Kassick had a long history of alcohol abuse, and a syringe was found at the scene. He had alcohol and drugs in his system at the time of his death.

Mearkle was granted a $250,000 bail on Tuesday and will wear an electronic monitoring device until her preliminary hearing on April 20.
