Prison escape: Fake email account used by con man to forge 'bail granted' email for officials
  • 9 years ago
An ingenious fraudster escaped from one of the most secure prisons in south London by posing as a senior court clerk and forging his own bail letter in March 2014.

Neil Moore, 28, was being held at the Wandsworth Prison for a £1.8 million fraud offense. He impersonated staff from multiple major banks in the United States and the United Kingdom, and amassed a huge sum of money by deceiving big organizations between February 2012 and November 2013.

He also reportedly had at least four different aliases.

Moore crafted his plan to escape by using a smuggled smartphone to set up a bogus web domain which looked similar to an official government domain.

Moore then use the fake domain to send e-mails claiming that Moore had been granted bail by the Southwark Crown Court. He even registered the name under Scotland Yard Detective Inspector Chris Soole, the person in charge of investigating his case.

The domain imitated Her Majesty's Court Service that used hyphens instead of dots. Prison staff failed to spot the subtle difference, and released Moore on March 10, 2014.

The prison didn't noticed anything amiss until Moore's solicitor came to the prison and found out his client had already been 'granted bail' three days earlier.

However, around the same time, Moore, for reasons unknown, had a change of heart and turned himself in.

Moore plead guilty to eight counts of fraud and one count of escape from lawful custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 20.
