Gaucher disease is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder caused by the deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase. This in turn causes the accumulation of certain detrimental lipids in the body, especially the glycolipid glucocerebroside. The lipids are accumulated mainly within the macrophages, blood cells, spleen, liver, and bone marrow.
