UMP triumphs as National Front surges and Socialists slump

The French press reacts to the surprise results from the first round of local elections. Former president Nicolas Sarkozy is celebrating after his UMP party attracted the highest number of votes, heading off the challenge from the far-right National Front. Marine Le Pen's party had been expected to pull off a coup and beat both main parties. The ruling Socialists suffered a dismal defeat, coming in third.
