LIGHT, Reborn Light
Renowned media artist Lee Lee-nam held his large-scale solo exhibition at Gana Art Center in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Under the theme of 'reborn light,' the artist showcases approximately 30 media art pieces, which express his reflection of humanity and light. Lee has been exploring the common ground of human and media art using the friendly medium of TV to interact with the public. His installation "Reborn Light," where a pigeon repeatedly sinks into water and float to the air in a flood of flashlight, depicts resurrection and salvation. Also, "Why Jesus Christ Shouldered a Television" displays the clash between analogue (spirit) and digital (material). Jesus carrying an analogue television signifies death while the digital technology used in the piece connotes resurrection. However, this piece does not try to express that the end of analogue technology, but rather the harmony between analogue and digital technology. As for "Born Again Light," in a twist to Michelangelo's Pieta sculpture, the artist separates the dead body of Jesus from Mary's comfortable hold and lifts it into the air. In fact, Jesus has not one but two shadows ? one of an adult's and the other of baby Jesus' and the baby's shadow indicates 'rebirth.' Lee's pieces remind us of the words light, life and rebirth, which ultimately display the artist's reflection of humanity and technology.
