France: govt survives no-confidence vote called over controversial economy bill

France’s Socialist government has survived a no-confidence vote in parliament.
The vote was called after Prime Minister Manuel Valls resorted to decree on Tuesday (17 February) to push through parliament a package of economically liberal reforms, despite strong opposition from the French left.
The bill, spearheaded by Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron, now goes through for Senate approval.
The reforms aim to cut red tape in several areas, including allowing more shops to open on Sundays and evenings and speeding up job dismissal procedures.
