BASE jumpers Johnny Korthuis and Luke Hively drove out to an undisclosed location in New Mexico to BASE jump off what they thought was an abandoned antenna. But when they got their, they found that some local hawks had decided the antenna was Their territory. Not ones to be put off by obstacles like birds, even if the birds in question were super aggressive and armed with razor sharp talons they climbed up to the top and got ready to jump. Then, moments before Johnny took off, one of the birds flew past and grabbed his pilot chute, probably the one piece of gear you want to keep as safe as possible, as it is what pulls your main chute open. If you listen closely, you can hear a small warble of fear in Johnny's voice, but using a buddy system developed through years of experience, the two both made successful jumps. WHEW.
It turns out that the antenna is actually decommissioned because of the hawks. So all of the usual hassle from police or security guards is totally absent, but replaced by the new hassle of irate wildlife. 'Perching on a handrail is tricky at the best of times,' says Johnny. 'let alone when you are 300ft in the air and you have a raptor going for your head.'
Johnny and Luke filmed the episode on Two Drift POV cameras, one go pro hero 3+, and Zeal's in-goggle 1080p camera. As for the rail perching, Johnny swears by Five Ten shoes and a good friend to swat the hawks away.
