STORYLINE
Many residents of Tehran celebrated Valentine's Day on Saturday, an occasion frowned upon by the authorities in Iran as a western phenomenon that encourages pre-marital relationships.
Couples, some holding hands, were out purchasing flowers and browsing though gift shops selling cards, teddy bears and chocolates.
This year the government has banned items that have a direct reference to the western celebration of Valentine's Day to prevent its promotion in the country and many cafes were ordered to close earlier than usual.
The restrictions, however, did not prevent many young Iranians from celebrating the day of romance.
