MISS LEBANON IN HOT WATER AFTER SELFIE WITH MISS ISRAEL
Miss Israel, Doron Matalon, who is currently in Miami for the Miss Universe pageant which will be held on January 25, posted a selfie to her Instagram page last week, in which she is posing alongside fellow contestants form Japan, Slovenia and Lebanon. It may seem pretty harmless, but its sparked strong reactions in Lebanon, on social networks and in the press.
As the online version of Lebanese newspaper “The Daily Star” reports, the photo has triggered controversy in the country, with many web users criticizing Miss Lebanon Saly Greige, for appearing next to her Israeli competitor. They say Israel and Lebanon are still technically at war and feel their beauty queen has made a big mistake.
Miss Lebanon has responded to the criticism, reposting the controversial photo but reframing it so Miss Israel is no longer in the picture. She has also posted a short message saying Miss Israel photobombed the original shot and that she had been doing everything in her power to avoid the Israeli contestant in the lead up to the Miss Universe competition.
And Miss Israel has also commented on the matter, again in an online post. Doron Matalon can’t understand why a simple photo has caused such a fuss, and says it’s a shame Miss Lebanon could not put aside any hostility towards Israel, at least for the duration of the competition.
