Indonesia goes ahead with executions of foreigners despite protest

In a deepening diplomatic row, Indonesia has gone ahead and executed six prisoners for drug offences, including five foreigners.
Brazil and the Netherlands have recalled their ambassadors in protest, as their pleas for clemency were ignored.
Executions in Indonesia resumed last year after a gap of five years.
This despite condemnation from human rights groups and foreign governments against the death penalty.
Brazil says the execution of its national by firing squad would affect bilateral relations.
The Netherlands, Indonesia’s former colonial ruler, also condemned the execution of its citizen, calling it “cruel and inhumane”.
Jakarta ignored months of lobbying by foreign officials, who campaigned for the death penalties to be replaced by jail terms.
