Of course, this was anything but a run-of-the mill coin. It’s called ‘the Birch Cent’ and it was produced in 1792.
What sets it apart is the rarity, as it was created as part of an experiment not long after the U.S. Mint was founded. The ‘Birch Cent’, which is named after the engraver Robert Birch, is one of 10 similar coins that are known to be in existence today.
Miss Liberty’s side profile appears on the coin as does the phrase “Liberty Parent of Science & Industry.” For the new owner of the centuries old coin, 55-year-old Kevin Lipton, the piece is something that is remarkably special, as he’s had a penchant for it since the early 1980s.
