Families await news as search for missing AirAsia plane halts for night

One by one, anxious men and women arrive at Singapore's Changi Airport, where they await news of an AirAsia plane which went missing Sunday.

The Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501 from Indonesia's Surabaya to Singapore lost contact shortly after 6 a.m. local time.

One woman said her fiancee was on board.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FIANCEE OF INDONESIAN ON BOARD MISSING AIRASIA PLANE, LOUISE SIDHARTA SAYING:

"They (Sidharta's fiancé's family) planned their vacation on their own. It was supposed to be their last vacation, before us (we) got married. It was to be his last vacation with his family."

AirAsia Chief Executive Tony Fernandes tweeted that he's on his way to Indonesia for the search.

He said his thoughts are with the 162 passengers and crew members on board.

In Jakarta, an air transportation department official says the pilots had asked to change course to avoid bad weather.
