290 SYRIAN CULTURAL SITES DAMAGED BY CIVIL WAR
The United Nations` training and research arm UNITAR released an alarming report earlier on this week, saying close to 300 cultural sites in Syria have been destroyed or badly damaged since the start of the ongoing civil war which began over three years ago.
The findings were based on satellite imagery which indicated 290 Syrian cultural sites have been directly affected since the start of the conflict. 24 of them have been completely destroyed, 104 have been severely damaged and 85 moderately damaged. Aleppo has suffered the worst says UNITAR with 139 sites across the city being badly damaged. Some of them, like the Ancient City of Aleppo, are listed as UNESCO World heritage sites.
Palmyra which is famous for its ruins and funerary monuments in the Valley of the Tombs has also been exposed to major damage. A road has also been built right through the middle of the necropolis, cutting through the archaeological area, causing further destruction.
The damage has mostly been caused by armed conflict between forces loyal to the Bashar al-Assad regime and the Free Syrian Army, but also members of the Islamic State terror group. The radical Islamists have been turning a profit from the warzone by looting historical sites and selling artefacts and relics to buy weapons and fund their movement.
