American troops taking time to mark Christmas Eve -- and remembering family members celebrating without them back home.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHAPLAIN LIEUTENANT COLONEL, BILL KILLOUGH, SAYING:

"Being away from family during Christmas is hard. My family gets together every year during this time for gifts and being together and food and going together through our Christian rituals which means the world to us and so there is sadness and I miss them."

Soldiers drinking communion wine and singing hymns together by candlelight in the base chapel.

About 1,000 of these soldiers recently learned they will be staying in Afghanistan longer than expected as Taliban attacks increase in frequency -- so any connection to home is more than welcome.
