As Santa makes his way around the world...his every move is being tracked from here:

The North American Aerospace Defense Command -- also known as NORAD -- in Colorado.

It's a tradition dating back to 1955.

Admiral William Gortney says Santa's itinerary isn't always predictable.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ADMIRAL WILLIAM GORTNEY, COMMANDER, NORTH AMERICAN AEROSPACE DEFENSE (NORAD) AND U.S. NORTHERN COMMAND, SAYING:

"It's the most efficient route taking into account the winds that are out there. He's passed over North Korea, over the Great Wall. and he's on his way to Beijing as we speak. He's already delivered more than 115 billion packages to good little boys and girls around the world. "

NORAD's Santa tracker apparently began with a Sears ad, which misprinted the telephone number for the North Pole.

Instead, children got the number for the Continental Air Command -- now NORAD.

Today, more than 1300 volunteers are manning the phones.
