Australian PM orders investigation after deadly hostage crisis

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott orders an investigation into Tuesday's hostage crisis.

He asked how convicted felon Man Haron Monis, seen here in a clip from broadcaster ABC, was able to walk into a Sydney cafe with a concealed shotgun.

Three people, including the armed gunman, were killed during the police raid at the end of the siege.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER, TONY ABBOTT SAYING:

"We do need to know why the perpetrator of this horrible outrage got permanent residency. We do need to know how he could've been on welfare for so many years. We do need to know what this individual was doing with a gun licence. We particularly need to know how someone with such a long record of violence, such a long record of mental instability was out on bail."

Monis was charged as an accessory to murder, and with dozens of counts of sexual assault.

He'd been free on bail.
