Psychologists battle over Senate report on interrogation

A spokeswoman for the American Psychological Association said Wednesday she was "sickened by some of the brutal details" of a U.S. Senate report on CIA interrogation techniques and believes the two CIA-hired psychologists referred to in the report should be held accountable.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) RHEA FARBERMAN, AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AND MEMBER COMMUNICATIONS, SAYING:

"The techniques that were described are clearly torture. They are a violation of everything our discipline stands for. They are clearly a violation of human rights and international law. As I said earlier, the two psychologists who apparently were involved, are not members of our association. They're therefore beyond the reach of our ethics program. But regardless, they should be held accountable."

The Association spokeswoman says the type of CIA interrogation techniques outlined in the report are not only wrong and unethical - but also ineffective.
