British boy band One Direction may have taken home the top award of the night for artist of the year, but pop's leading ladies delivered the most high-octane performances at Sunday's (November 23) American Music Awards.

Taylor Swift kicked off the evening with a sultry and highly polished performance of her No. 1 single "Blank Space."

The 24-year old was also awarded the first-ever Dick Clark Award for Excellence, in memory of the founder of the American Music Awards who died in 2012.

Katy Perry, who earned three awards at the AMAs, will headline the half-time entertainment at February's Super Bowl, the most-watched U.S. sporting and television event.

The 30-year-old pop singer joins the likes of Madonna, Beyonce and Prince to perform at the game.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1" tallied 123 million dollars (USD) in ticket sales to top weekend box office charts and score the year's biggest U.S. opening, according to studio estimates.
