Four Israelis killed in synagogue attack

Two suspected Palestinian men wielding knives and axes killed four people inside a synagogue in Jerusalem early Tuesday before being shot dead by police.

The attack happened in an ultra-Orthodox neighbourhood of West Jerusalem.

One resident described the scene outside the synagogue.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) RESIDENT ON SITE SAYING:

"We came down from the top of the street and we heard the sirens the ambulances coming we walked down adn we heard that a terrorist came into the shul here and with a kinfe they started to stab people. The police came after a few seconds....after a few minutes and they were killed".

Police said at least one of the suspects was from a predominantly Palestinian side of the city.

Palestinian radio reports described the attackers as "martyrs" and the Islamist group Hamas praised the attack.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in London and commented on the incident.
