Palestinians mark ten years since Yasser Arafat's death

A decade after his death, Yasser Arafat’s memory is being honoured by Palestinians.
Seen as an icon of resistance by his people, Arafat had led the PLO since 1969.
The official cause of death was a massive stroke but doctors at the time they could not determine the origin of his illness. Many Palestinians believe Israel killed him.
One ceremony for the 10 year anniversary was held by Palestinians in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
Speaking to euronews there, Nasser al-Kodwa of ‘The Yasser Arafat Foundation’ and a nephew of the late leader, said:
“Palestinian people today are saying they still miss Yasser Arafat and are inspired by his legacy.”
Yet a commemoration rally planned in Gaza was cancelled amid a rift between Palestinian Fatah and Hamas factions – despite their decision to form a reconciliation government.
Our correspondent in Cairo, Mohammed Sheikhibrahim, said: “On this tenth anniversary, Palestinians are counting on international justice to establish their state and hope to achieve the sort of reconciliation that would enable them to mark this occasion in the Gaza Strip.”
