Tourists wade through high water in Venice as storms hit Italy

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: Venice was hit by higher water levels than normal on Friday (November 7) forcing tourists to use their initiative in navigating the lagoon city.

A bad weather system has been drenching Italy for days and historic St. Mark's square did not escape the consequences.

The canal-side bars and restaurants were almost indistinguishable from the canals themselves as water lapped around the legs of tables and chairs.

While some decided to either wade barefoot across the piazza or use elaborate plastic bag shoe coverings, others took the easy route and made use of the raised walkways to avoid the water.

The city will remain on alert for high water levels until Saturday when a break in the weather is expected.
