On the day after Republicans swept the midterm elections, President Obama says he got the message loud and clear.

SOUNDBITE: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING:

"To everyone who voted, I want you to know that I hear you."

When the new Congress convenes in January, Republicans will have control of both houses.

Obama says he thinks he can have a productive relationship with new Senate leader Mitch McConnell.

SOUNDBITE: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING:

"He has always been very straight forward with me. To his credit, he has never made a promise that he couldn't deliver."

But before the current session of Congress wraps up, Obama says there's still work to get done, including a new authorization for use of military force against Islamic State militants.

SOUNDBITE: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING:

"The world needs to know we are united behind this effort and the men and women of our military deserve our clear and unified support."
