Anger over assassination of liberal political leader in Yemen

Hundreds have turned out for a protest in Sanaa in Yemen to voice their anger after the assassination of a political leader.
Mohamed Abdelmalik al-Motowakal of the liberal Union of Popular Forces party was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Sunday.
This just hours after the country’s main political factions signed an agreement to form a new government.
University professor Aminah al-Nosiri told reporters: “There is a clearing out of thinking people, the matter is not connected to political conflict. It is a targeting of those who carry the idea of a civil life and state. The issue goes back many years.”
Another professor, Zaid Attif, said: “The assassination is like the assassination of the Yemeni dream. Every citizen is looking for safe and intelligent ways of leading a civil life and to build a civil state.”
It is hoped the political agreement signed on Saturday will defuse political tensions in Yemen, with the president and the prime minister given a mandate to form a new government.
